Preparing For Your Appointment

Spend some time thinking about the perfect location in your home or yard for the most relaxed, peaceful experience. Some pets have a favorite spot by the window, on your bed, or under a favorite tree in the yard. Wherever they are most comfortable is fine. You can use a favorite bed, or blanket, or have a favorite toy present as well.

If your pet still has an appetite, you can have special treats available to be given during the appointment.

You set the stage - we take our lead from you. Family members that are unable to be physically present can also participate by video call if you’d like.

Take some time to view the catalog of memento items, and decide if you'd like to add any to your order. These items can be selected anytime up until the day after your pet has passed. If you have any questions, Dr. Lori will be happy to answer them at the time of your animal euthanasia appointment or you can check out our frequently asked questions page.

Your Appointment Day

The Morning Of

On the morning of the appointment, before our arrival, we will contact you to confirm your appointment. Should anything change, please contact us so that we can help. Otherwise, Dr. Lori will call you when she's on her way to give you an estimated time of arrival.

The Appointment

When Dr. Lori arrives, she will have everything she needs to be sure you have a stress-free experience. She will explain the medications used and the timing of each step to everyone present at the appointment. Once final decisions for Mementos or aftercare options are completed, all attention is on you, your family, and your pet. Other pets are welcome to participate as well.

The goal is a peaceful, painless, fear and anxiety free passing at home, surrounded by family. Dr. Lori will assess your pet's anxiety level and emotional needs during the first few minutes in your home. Pets may be fearful, protective, or overly friendly when she arrives. No worries! Dr. Lori brings a peaceful calm demeanor that will help to soothe fearful babies and put them at ease.

The Procedure

There are two stages of medications used. The first is a combination injection that offers pain relief and sedation, given intramuscularly in the rump area, and takes 3 to 5 minutes to take effect in most dogs and 1 to 3 minutes in most cats. A short time later, your pet will be comfortable and in a pain-free twilight sleep, resting peacefully by your side.

The second medication is a quick-acting anesthetic given intravenously. Dr. Lori will select an injection site that allows you to be fully involved in comforting your pet right to the end. This medication works quickly to deepen your pet’s depth of sleep to that similar to surgical sleep, and finally, on to passing peacefully.

After The Passing

We offer a free hair clipping, and if you have opted for a private cremations, a free paw print as well, which allows you to keep a small memento of your pet while you wait for the delivery of the more permanent options you may have selected. We then respectfully and gently prepare for transportation by carefully wrapping your baby in a blanket and swaddling them for this final trip. We will then allow you and your family a few minutes to say your final goodbyes.

If you have selected a private or communal cremation, we will transport your baby to the morgue area to await their final procedure by the staff of Pet Meadow. Pet Meadow offers viewings and attended cremations as well - if you would like to be present, arrangements can be made directly with Pet Meadow.
